Uganda Cranes star Allan Okello has revealed how Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa personally persuaded him to sign for Vipers SC, after his former club KCCA FC turned down his requests during contract talks.
Speaking on The Game of Life with journalist Andrew Mwanguhya, Okello shared the untold story behind his move from being a free agent to becoming one of Vipersâ most important players.
âI had to look for a team, and it was coming to four months without one. I needed a club that could treat me and also give me a paycheck,â Okello said.
After consulting with his manager, the talented midfielder decided to approach his boyhood club KCCA FC for a possible return.
âI went back to Lugogo and told them I wanted to stay if they could treat me and allow me to play again. But they said they werenât ready to do what I was asking for,â he revealed.
Mulindwa Steps In
News of Okelloâs free-agent status quickly reached Vipers SC President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa, who immediately contacted the playmaker.
âDr. Mulindwa called me and said we couldnât talk everything on the phone. When we met, he told me he knew what I was going through and asked me to say all I wanted,â Okello recalled.
Before discussing finances, Okello first asked for medical help.
âI told him I needed treatment, and before we even agreed on anything, he said, âTomorrow, youâre going for a scan.ââ
He also mentioned his sister, who was in Senior Four, and requested that she be allowed to join St. Maryâs Kitende â a request that Dr. Mulindwa immediately granted.
A Deal Built on Faith
At that point, Okello had not even asked about salary or sign-on fees, but Mulindwaâs generosity sealed the move.
âThe next day, he told me to come and sign. We had a few issues about figures, but he agreed to my demands. I got all I wanted,â Okello added. âIâll never disrespect Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa for what he has done for me.â
Okello Rewards Vipersâ Faith
Since signing for Vipers SC, Okello has repaid the clubâs trust by helping the Venoms win both the Uganda Premier League and Uganda Cup titles.
As Vipers prepare for another CAF Champions League campaign, the creative midfielder will once again be central to their ambitions on the continental stage.
