“I Create Music That Connects Cultures” – Producer Oppe Speaks on His Journey from Uganda to East Africa

Uganda’s music industry has over the years produced iconic stars, but behind the hits are talented producers who craft the soundtracks of East Africa. One such rising name is Oppe, born Opendi James, a passionate music producer and sound engineer whose creative fingerprint is on some of the region’s biggest songs.

Oppe’s production credits speak volumes. He is the mastermind behind several Pallaso anthems, including the widely loved “Baby Mama” and the fan-favorite “Bwekwangala”—a song so powerful it later got a remix with the legendary Jose Chameleone. These collaborations not only cemented Pallaso’s place at the top but also introduced Oppe as one of Uganda’s most bankable producers.

Speaking about his chemistry with Pallaso, Oppe explained:

“Working with Pallaso has been a blessing. He’s an artist who knows what he wants, and he allows me to bring out the best in him. Together we’ve created songs that people will dance to for years.”

Beyond Pallaso, Oppe is also behind the massive hit “See You Tonight” by Cindy and Omega, which has grown into one of the biggest songs in the land. Its popularity recently reached new heights when it headlined not one, but two major concertsOmega’s explosive show at Cricket Oval and Cindy’s unforgettable concert at the Millennium Grounds in Lugogo. Both events drew thousands of fans, cementing the track as a modern classic and elevating Oppe’s status as a hit-making producer.

Reflecting on that success, Oppe shared:

“‘See You Tonight’ was special from the very first beat. When Cindy and Omega laid their voices on it, I knew we had created a song that would move the nation. Seeing it headline two huge concerts is the kind of reward every producer dreams of.”

His touch has also been felt by other heavyweights including Eddy Kenzo, Uganda’s Grammy-nominated superstar, and Mudra, one of the fastest-rising hitmakers in the country. These collaborations further solidify his position as a versatile producer trusted by both veterans and the new generation.

But Oppe’s vision extends beyond Uganda’s borders. He has worked with Harmonize from Tanzania, one of East Africa’s most celebrated artists, proving his ability to compete on a continental scale. His collaborations with brands like Vamos 256, Ink Stained, and Mozey highlight his dynamic reach—merging music with lifestyle and culture.

On what makes him different from other producers, Oppe explained:

“I don’t chase trends. I focus on creating timeless music that people will still dance to or feel connected with even after 10 years.”

Raised with a love for music, Oppe’s journey started humbly, experimenting with sound engineering software and collaborating with upcoming talents before breaking into mainstream recognition. His persistence, ear for detail, and ability to adapt to different styles have turned him into one of the most sought-after young producers in Uganda.

Reflecting on working with both legends and fresh talent, he added:

“Producing for icons like Chameleone and rising stars like Mudra has taught me one thing—music has no boundaries. Great sound brings generations together.”

Looking ahead, Oppe is preparing to work on more cross-border collaborations and is dedicated to mentoring upcoming artists. He believes Uganda has untapped potential and is committed to giving young musicians access to professional sound and global exposure.

“My dream is to see Uganda become a music powerhouse in Africa. If we producers and artists keep working together, we can put our sound on the global map.”

With consistency, innovation, and a growing network, Oppe is not just producing songs—he is shaping the sound of a new East African generation
