Three people have died at a stadium in Kasarani, Nairobi on Wednesday at Raila Odinga’s body viewing ceremony. The police, in an attempt to disperse the surging crowd and bring order, fired rubber bullets and live rounds; the ensuing chaos resulted in the death of three mourners. However local media reported that a fourth person also died.
Raila Odinga, Kenya’s former prime minister, died of cardiac arrest in India on October 15. He also served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Langata Constituency from 1992 to 2013. He was the leader of Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party and carried the party’s flag as the presidential candidate.
Huge crowds gathered at the airport when the body arrived, forcing authorities to momentarily suspend flights. Mourners gained access to restricted areas, prompting a two hour precautionary closure.
The crowd moved in procession to escort the vehicle carrying the body to a stadium in Kasarani, 10 kilometers from the airport. When the convoy arrived at the stadium, it was already packed, with even more people waiting outside.
