Former Kenya’s Prime Minister, Raila Odinga dies at 80

Former Kenyan prime minister, Raila Odinga has died at the age of 80 after suffering a cardiac arrest according to a report by Mathrubhumi, an Indian newspaper.

It was earlier reported that the opposition leader was undergoing treatment in the southern Indian city of Kochi, where he suffered a cardiac arrest on Wednesday and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Raila Odinga lost all five of his presidential bids with two of his campaigns leading to chaos and bloodshed. In 2007, after disputing election results, he led protests that plunged the country in an episode of serious election violence, resulting in over 1300 deaths and thousands of people displaced from their homes.

As an opposition leader, he helped seal two of the country's most important reforms: multiparty democracy in 1991 and a new constitution in 2010.
