“I Won’t Be Given the Ticket, So I’m Stepping Aside” — Derrick Nyeko Exits 2026 Race After NUP Snub

Makindye East Member of Parliament, Derrick Nyeko, has announced he will not seek re-election in the 2026 general elections, effectively ending his parliamentary career after just one term. His decision follows what insiders describe as a clear signal from the National Unity Platform (NUP) that he would not receive the party ticket.

Nyeko, who won his seat in 2021 on the NUP ticket, broke the news on his social media platforms, describing the choice as the result of “deep reflection.” However, sources reveal the move came shortly after he was informed that the party’s Elections Management Committee would not clear him for a second term.

This came as a surprise to many, especially since Nyeko had already started visible campaign preparations in Makindye East, including putting up posters and mobilizing supporters.

In his statement, Nyeko thanked his constituents for their trust and assured them he served with “honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust” they placed in him.

“I am leaving politics with a clean record — a man of no corruption, no scandals, and no regrets,” he said. “Though some may be disappointed by my decision, I urge you to remember the victories we achieved together.”

Political observers say Nyeko’s exit highlights the internal challenges within NUP as it navigates the complex and sometimes contentious process of ticket allocation ahead of the 2026 elections. Several aspirants in the party have voiced concerns over the transparency and fairness of the candidate selection.

Meanwhile, the battle to succeed Nyeko in Makindye East is already underway. Former NBS journalist Robert Sekidde (Tuff B) and James Kayondo are among those seeking the NUP flag, promising vigorous campaigns as the party finalizes its candidates.

Nyeko’s departure sends a clear message about the realities of political life within opposition ranks in Uganda — where loyalty, party politics, and strategic calculations often determine political futures.

As the 2026 elections approach, all eyes will be on NUP’s candidate selection and the impact it will have on the party’s unity and electoral prospects in key constituencies like Makindye East.
