Lamlioui Leads Golden Boot Race as Allan Okello Bows Out After Historic CHAN 2024 Run

With just one match remaining in the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024, Morocco’s Oussama Lamlioui stands at the top of the Golden Boot race with four goals, while Uganda’s Allan Okello exits the tournament after a historic campaign that captured continental attention.

Okello, who scored three goals and was instrumental in Uganda’s best-ever CHAN performance — a quarter-final finish — has now bowed out of contention. Despite his early exit, the 25-year-old midfielder leaves the tournament as one of its breakout stars, showcasing exceptional vision, composure, and attacking instinct.

Meanwhile, Lamlioui, the RS Berkane striker, remains the frontrunner to clinch the Golden Boot as he leads Morocco into the final against Madagascar. Having found the net in three successive matches and converting in the semi-final shootout against Senegal, Lamlioui has been the driving force behind Morocco’s bid for a record third CHAN title.

Also tied on three goals are Thabiso Kutumela (South Africa) and Soufiane Bayazid (Algeria), whose campaigns have similarly concluded. Madagascar’s trio of Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa, Toky Rakotondraibe, and Fenohasina Razafimaro, each with two goals, could still make a late push in the final — though they would need standout performances to surpass Lamlioui.

“I’m proud of what we achieved,” said Okello after Uganda’s quarter-final exit. “We came here with belief, and we leave having made history. I’m grateful for the opportunity and the support from Ugandans.”

CHAN PAMOJA 2024 has been a showcase of emerging talent, with over 60 players scoring across the competition, and debutant nations such as Kenya making notable contributions.

As Saturday’s final approaches, the spotlight is firmly on Lamlioui — who could not only help secure another title for Morocco but also seal his place as the tournament’s top scorer.
