The Times Higher Education (THE) has ranked Makerere University number one in East Africa for the 2026 world university rankings. Prof. Sarah Ssali, the acting vice chancellor of Makerere made the announcement in a press conference on October 16. She further revealed that the rankings places the ivory tower in the 801-1000 band worldwide.
“It gives me great pleasure to share with our stakeholders and the general public that Makerere university has been ranked number one in the East African region,” said professor Ssali.
“ we continue to uphold our legacy as a leading institution of higher learning committed to teaching, research, and innovation that drives Africa’s development.” She stated.
Makerere scored 37.2 points in key evaluation areas; Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry. The region’s average was 18.8. Makerere out performed institutions like Kenyatta University, university of Dar es salaam, university of Rwanda, and Nairobi university, all of which were ranked in the 1500+ band.
