Minister Balaam Barugahara Defends Tamale Mirundi Junior Amid Arrest Threats by Juliet Zawedde

Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Hon. Balaam Barugahara, has publicly declared that he will not allow the arrest of Tamale Mirundi Junior, following threats allegedly made by U.S.-based Ugandan businesswoman and socialite Juliet Zawedde.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Minister Balaam emphasized the protection of freedom of speech and reassured Junior of the government’s commitment to defending truth and the constitutional right to express oneself.

"Mr. Tamale Mirundi Junior, younger brother, as Minister of State for Youth Affairs, you're safe from arrest when speaking the truth for our country's good and the younger generation's benefit. Our Constitution guarantees freedom of speech," Balaam stated.

He went on to mention key government institutions and individuals, including the Attorney General Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, CID Director AIGP Tom Magambo, DPP Justice Jane Frances Abodo, and Justice Minister Hon. Norbert Mao, affirming that none would support such an arrest.

"As government, it’s our duty to defend the truth, not suppress it with money or power," he added.

However, Balaam also issued a note of caution to Junior, urging him to use the internet responsibly.

"Let’s use the internet responsibly, not misuse it. Madam Juliet Zawedde is my friend as well. I will reach out to her to seek dialogue with you and any other persons she differs with. For God and Our Country."

The Minister’s remarks were in response to a video circulating online, in which Tamale Mirundi Junior appeals to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to intervene, claiming that Juliet Zawedde is plotting to have him arrested over statements he made online.

This incident has sparked debate among Ugandans online regarding digital rights, freedom of expression, and the influence of powerful individuals in silencing critics.
