President Museveni has denied Beti Olive Namisango Kamya another term at the helm of the country’s anti-corruption agency by replacing her with high court judge, Aisha Naluzze.
Presidential assistant for press and mobilization, Faruk Kirunda, confirmed the appointment via a tweet on October 7, “H.E KagutaMuseveni, in exercise of his constitutional powers, has appointed Hon. Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala as the new Inspector General of Government (IGG), replacing Hon. Beti Olive Namisango Kamya.” The statement read.
The 1st and 2nd deputies, Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria and Mrs. Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe, respectively, maintained their positions.
The position for the country’s chief watch dog had been vacant since September 24 this year when Beti Kamya’s contract expired. The appointees now await to be vetted by parliament before taking office.
The inspectorate of government is an independent institution established under the constitution to fight corruption, abuse of authority and of public office. It had been running without leadership ever since Beti Kamya’s contract expired, making it ineffective in fighting corruption and providing accountability oversight for different leaders and institutions of government.
Beti Kamya, once a fierce critic of president Museveni and an advocate against corruption, brought a ray of hope to most anti-corruption campaigners when she was appointed as the IGG.
However her leadership, though remarkable, didn’t prove effective in handling high profile corruption cases.
Justice Aisha Naluzze’s appointment was long overdue and comes a time Uganda is grappling with gross misuse of public funds.
