NUP's Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo Elected New Kampala Lord Mayor

National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo has been declared the new Lord Mayor of Kampala following the city’s election held on January 22, 2026.

The Kampala Returning Officer, Ms Jennifer Kyobutungi, officially announced the results, confirming that Balimwezo secured a commanding 141,220 votes, comfortably defeating seven other contenders in the race.

Balimwezo, a former Nakawa East Member of Parliament, clinched the mayoral seat in a decisive victory that ended the long political dominance of Erias Lukwago, who has served as Kampala Lord Mayor for 15 years.

Lukwago finished third with 41,915 votes, while Moses Kizito Nsubuga emerged second after polling 43,615 votes. Other candidates trailed far behind, including Beatrice Mao, who garnered 2,162 votes.

Balimwezo’s victory signals a significant political shift in the capital, strengthening the National Unity Platform’s grip on Kampala’s leadership and reshaping the city’s political landscape ahead of the next national election cycle.

The new Lord Mayor is expected to be sworn in after the Electoral Commission completes post-election formalities.
