Ugandan music star Edirisa Musuuza, popularly known as Eddy Kenzo, has shared his candid views on the upcoming general elections, revealing both excitement and caution about the political climate for entertainers.
The Big Talent boss told BBS Terefayina that this election season is one he is particularly looking forward to because it provides musicians with opportunities to earn substantial income. “The electoral season we are heading into is one that I am particularly interested in and highly looking forward to. It’s one of those periods where we earn good money,” he said.
However, Kenzo noted that the political environment has become riskier for artists compared to previous seasons. In the past, musicians could freely perform without fear of backlash, but today, political divisions often lead to unnecessary hate against performers based on the clients they entertain.
“I’m glad people are starting to realize that this is just politics and it shouldn’t divide us,” he added, appreciating the growing awareness among Ugandans against politicized discrimination.
On whether he would perform for opposition supporters despite aligning with the ruling NRM, Kenzo was straightforward: “As a musician, I go where the money is. If I’m paid by the opposition, I would entertain their revellers—not because I support them, but because it pays. Every penny matters, especially for someone like me who rose from the ghetto.”
The BET Award winner also acknowledged friendships with fellow musicians who are opposition supporters but explained that performing for them openly could cause misunderstandings. He blamed the politically charged environment on smooth-talking politicians who manipulate emotions and sow disunity.
Kenzo concluded that musicians should be free to perform for anyone without facing discrimination, emphasizing that politics is merely a game of differing opinions.
