Singer Azawi has come out strongly in defense of fellow Ugandan artist Eddy Kenzo, calling out the growing disrespect she says he continues to face despite his groundbreaking accomplishments both at home and internationally.
Speaking passionately about Kenzo’s contribution to the Ugandan music industry, the African Music star said it’s high time the nation gave him his flowers.
“Kenzo did it all. It’s probably the new people who don’t understand his influence,” Azawi said. “If you want to know how big Kenzo is, go to Gambia, Togo… stage a show with him and you’ll feel him. Right now, some people just don’t know, but Kenzo sold out stadiums.”
Azawi, who has herself gained regional acclaim, revealed that she has long admired Kenzo’s resilience, describing him as a trailblazer whose success helped elevate Ugandan music on the global stage.
She further noted that Kenzo is arguably the most streamed Ugandan artist, with close to 700 million views across platforms — a feat that speaks volumes about his impact and consistency.
“Kenzo blew up and I think even up to now, there’s no most streamed Ugandan artist. If you garner all his views since his career started, there’s no one bigger than him,” she emphasized.
Azawi’s remarks come at a time when conversations around Kenzo’s legacy have been reignited on social media, with some fans and critics questioning his relevance. But to Azawi, such doubts are not only unfounded — they are deeply disrespectful.
She urged the industry and fans alike to recognize and celebrate Eddy Kenzo for paving the way for many and putting Uganda on the international music map.
