Retired Colonel Anthony Kyakabale Dies in Exile in Sweden

Retired Colonel Anthony Kyakabale, a former rebel commander and veteran of Uganda’s liberation struggle, has died in Sweden, where he had lived in exile for years following a fallout with President Yoweri Museveni’s government.

Sources close to the family confirmed that Col. Kyakabale passed away after a long illness. Details about the nature of his illness and funeral arrangements remain unclear as of publication.

Kyakabale was a key figure in Uganda’s 1980s liberation war that brought President Museveni to power. He later became involved in regional conflicts, notably playing a significant role in the 1994 Rwandan civil war that led to the fall of former President Juvenal Habyarimana’s regime.

After years in exile, Col. Kyakabale reconciled with the Ugandan government. He was appointed as a Special Envoy for Reconciliation at State House, a position personally sanctioned by President Museveni. According to sources, he continued to receive support from the Ugandan government until his death.

The retired colonel’s passing marks the end of a complex chapter in Uganda’s liberation and post-war political history, reflecting both his contributions and controversies in regional politics.

Further details about his death and burial arrangements are expected to be released by family and government officials in the coming days.
