Media personality Sheilah Gashumba is fighting back after social media critics linked her nightlife work to alleged sex trading, following BBC Africa Eye’s “Death in Dubai” documentary.
Some claims suggest that Gashumba provides girls to high-profile clients, including Brian Future, as a source of income. But Sheilah is firing back, calling the rumors “propaganda” and a misrepresentation of her life.
The TV presenter-turned-bar host, emcee, and now deejay shared her side of the story:
“I started working on TV when I was eight. My first phone was paid by my 80k per show on WBS TV and tips I got miming Blu3! My father always told me, ‘Everyone you want, you must work hard for it.’ Years later, I’m still standing, and everyone who chased the fast life is nowhere to be seen!”
Sheilah explained her grueling work schedule, hosting bars from 10 PM to 6 AM multiple nights a week while balancing her DJing career. She urges young girls to work hard and avoid exploitation:
“Stop painting a bad picture of my story yet you should be learning from it! If I was getting paid so easily like you claim, I would be on holiday every day of my life.”
The media star also pointed to her advocacy for young girls, recalling a 2022 tweet where she raised alarm over underage girls traveling to Dubai and Qatar for labor:
“I always find large groups of girls (60 girls) below 18 years wearing school uniform all covered going to either Dubai or Qatar!! What exactly are these young girls going there for!! I really hope they are safe out there.”
Sheilah’s response underscores the challenges of women in Uganda’s entertainment industry, and her determination to stay true to her journey while advocating for the safety and rights of young girls.
