Drama unfolded at Kavule headquarters when Makindye East Member of Parliament Hon. Derrick Nyeko made a surprise appearance for the NUP vetting process, just weeks after announcing he was quitting politics ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Nyeko, who had earlier told supporters that he was stepping aside for “personal reasons,” shocked fellow aspirants when he stormed the vetting room with nomination papers in hand. The move left many scratching their heads, wondering why the legislator had made such a sudden U-turn.
“Everyone was surprised. Some aspirants were even unsettled because they thought the seat was wide open,” a source at Kavule told reporters.
The development has now stirred mixed reactions within Makindye East, with some praising Nyeko for “coming back stronger,” while others accuse him of playing mind games with voters.
Analysts say his re-entry could completely change the dynamics of the race, considering his grassroots support and strong voice in Parliament.
As the dust settles, all eyes are on the NUP vetting committee to see whether Nyeko will reclaim the party flag or face stiff competition from fresh faces hungry for change.
