The battle for the Future of Uganda Premier League: Mulindwa and Magogo clash over New League Format

In an attempt to enhance the Ugandan premier league and promote fairness, the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) proposed a new playing format for the 2025/2026 season after a consultative meeting with the Uganda premier league clubs and different stakeholders.

On 20th August 2025, Edgar Watson (FUFA CEO) sent a letter to different clubs explaining in detail the new changes and their obligations under the under the new order. The clubs participating in the league were further informed that the new system would take effect this very season.

This didn't augur well with Lawrence Mulindwa, the majority shareholder and chief financier of Vipers SC. On 2 October, 2025 the club released a statement through it's official website informing fans and stakeholders that the club will not take part in the new game format until their concerns were addressed.

“Vipers Sports Club informs its stakeholders, football fans, and the general public that the club will not take part in the new double-header format game against Kitara,” The statement says.

This declaration was made about 24 hours before a scheduled match between Vipers SC and Kitara. In the statement, Lawrence Mulindwa further accused the local football governing body of blackmail and disrespect, going by how the club's petitions to FUFA were ignored.

The statement further reads, “To our surprise and dismay and with utter disrespect, we have to-date never received any formal response to the several pertinent issues raised in our petitions,” Mulindwa said. “Instead, we have been met with social media ridicule, blackmail, rebuke and ostracization.”
