“Ugandans Don’t Even Know What They’re Dancing To” — Dokta Brain Slams Lack of Lyrical Depth in Today’s Music

Renowned Ugandan musician and songwriter Dokta Brain has expressed deep concern over what he describes as a growing disconnect between rhythm and meaning in the country’s music industry.

In a recent statement, Dokta Brain pointed out that while the industry is thriving in terms of production quality and groove, lyrical depth has become a rare commodity. He argued that today’s hits are increasingly driven by catchy vocals and beats, while the substance and poetic value of songwriting have taken a back seat.

“Uganda’s music is more vocal than lyrical at the moment. Even Luganda songs — these people don’t even know what they’re dancing to,” Dokta Brain said. “There are lots of wrongly written hits.”

He emphasized that this shift is not only affecting the quality of music being released but also highlights a broader issue of intellectual engagement within the industry — from both creators and listeners.

“Uganda lacks intellects that can really understand the music and how it has been written,” he added.

The “Akaloosa” singer, known for his own lyrically driven music, expressed frustration over how lyricists — the creative minds behind powerful messages — are often sidelined in favor of artists who blow up through hype and viral trends.

“Lyricists are being treated in the most unfair way. Someone can even think they’re bigger than A Pass just because they’ve acquired forced attention,” he lamented.

Despite his criticism, Dokta Brain used the opportunity to shine a light on a few artists he believes are still holding the torch for lyrical integrity in Uganda. He mentioned Jim Nola, Sheena Skies, Ruyonga, Elijah, and Azawi as artists whose songwriting stands out in today’s industry landscape.

He urged Ugandans to support and appreciate such artists for keeping meaning alive in music.
