Ugandan music icon Jose Chameleone has added his powerful voice to the growing outcry against the surge of gang violence in the country, warning that lives are being lost and urging authorities to act before the situation worsens.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Leone Island boss revealed that he understands the “weight of violence”, having lived through similar experiences in his career and personal life. His message comes at a time when social media is flooded with demands for the government, police, and leaders to take a firm stand against rising gang culture.
Chameleone’s remarks were triggered by a tweet from events promoter Balaam Barugahara, who condemned the ongoing gang violence but also expressed concern that some innocent people were being wrongly accused. Balaam admitted he had personally faced intimidation but had chosen silence until the recent spate of incidents forced him to speak out publicly.
“I know the weight of violence, and I cannot stay silent when people are losing lives. This must stop now!” Chameleone stressed in his post.
Ugandans online have since rallied behind the musician’s call, tagging prominent figures and institutions including @PoliceUg, @AlienSkinUg, @BebeCoolUG, @NRMOnline, @Mukulaa, @bamunoba24, @mkainerugaba, @JudithNabakoob1, and @Humanrights256, demanding urgent interventions to restore peace and safety.
The entertainment industry has in recent months become entangled in violent clashes, often linked to rival fan bases and street gangs, sparking wider debates on security, human rights, and the responsibilities of public figures.
With one of Uganda’s most respected stars now leading the charge, pressure is mounting on both the government and community leaders to find lasting solutions to the crisis.
