When Prayers Meet Primates: Baboon invades Kasese Church

A stray baboon momentarily disrupted rosary prayers at Muhokya Roman catholic church in Kasese district on 1 October, 2025. Believers in the faith had gathered, as it’s customary, to recite the rosary to mark the holy month of mother Mary before a baboon, believed to have escaped from Queen Elizabeth national park stormed the church, deeply tarrying congregants.

Eye witnesses say the wild animal was earlier seen lingering around the village, causing a little bit of panic, especially for the safety of children and women. Uganda wild life authority was alerted and a rescue team of rangers were deployed to safely return the baboon to the game park.

No one was reported hurt after the incident and prayers resumed normally once the baboon was returned to the game park.

Wild life incursions greatly reduced when the national game park erected an electric fence around it's perimeters. Officials at Queen Elizabeth national park blame poachers for such incidences; animals stray away from the park while being chased by poachers.
